Amazing 2,000 Year Old Food Forest in Morocco
Have you ever considered a garden lasting 2,000 years? I know I haven’t. However, this Moroccan food forest has been producing food for the locals since the time of Christ! In the video below, Geoff Lawton talks about the time he first found this amazing place.
Geoff was camping on the beach in Morocco and decided to go explore inland. He came across a strange area surrounded by desert. It turned out to be a lush date palm overstory multi species food forest. Upon further exploration, he found a large variety of fruit trees and a lot of fruit inside this desert oasis.
He explained walking into the food forest as if he was walking into an organism. He walked out of the desert and into a cool, shaded, moist protected area.
He went back to visit years later and found that this Moroccan oasis is over 2000 years old and was currently being farmed by 800 people. Even so, It was quite stable and fertile.
The understory of this desert oasis was full of olives, figs, pomegranates, guavas, citrus, mulberries, carobs, bananas, grapes, and more. Click to watch the video below of Geoff recalling his visit to the food forest.
