Generac Generator Starts But Won’t Stay Running? COSense Fix (GB6500)
The Problem: Generator Shuts Down After Seconds
If your Generac generator with COSense starts but will not stay running, you are not alone. This is a common problem with the Generac COSense system (found on models like the GB6500, GP6500, and GP3600). The good news is you can fix it yourself in about 30 minutes with basic tools, and you do not need to take it to a repair shop.
What Is the COSense System?
COSense is Generac’s carbon monoxide detection and automatic shutdown system. It is designed to shut off the generator if it detects dangerous CO levels, which is an important safety feature. However, the COSense board can fail, causing the generator to shut down even when there is no carbon monoxide danger.
When the COSense board fails, the generator will start normally but shut off after a few seconds to a few minutes. You may see a yellow flashing light on the CO sensor module. Restarting the generator produces the same result over and over.

Step-by-Step Fix
Step 1: Remove the COSense Cover
Remove the sticker covering the COSense module, then remove the two T25 Torx screws holding the cover in place. Set the screws aside.
Step 2: Remove the Broken COSense Chip
Once the cover is off, you will see the COSense circuit board. If the board has failed, it needs to be removed. Carefully disconnect the wiring harness and pull the board out. The board is the source of the false shutdown signals.
Step 3: Create a Wire Jumper
With the COSense board removed, the generator’s ignition circuit is open. You need to close the circuit with a wire jumper. Cut a short piece of wire and strip both ends. Connect the jumper to the two wires that previously went to the COSense board. This bridges the circuit so the ignition can complete.
Step 4: Test the Generator
Before buttoning everything up, start the generator and let it run. It should now stay running without shutting down. Let it run for several minutes to confirm the fix is solid.
Step 5: Secure the Wiring
Once confirmed, wrap the jumper connections with electrical tape and secure the wiring with zip ties. Reinstall the cover and screws.

Bypassing the COSense system removes an important safety feature. Only do this if you are certain the COSense board has failed and is causing false shutdowns. You must now be extra vigilant about generator placement:
- Never operate the generator indoors or in an enclosed space
- Keep the generator at least 20 feet from any building
- Point the exhaust away from living areas
- Install battery-powered CO detectors in your home
- Consider replacing the COSense board rather than bypassing it permanently if the generator is still under warranty
Why Does the COSense Board Fail?
The COSense board is a small electronic module that is subject to vibration, heat, and moisture. Over time, the solder joints can crack or the chip itself can fail. This is a known issue with the Generac COSense system, and many owners have reported the same failure pattern.
Generac has not issued a formal recall, but the problem is widespread enough that repair shops are familiar with it. If your generator is still under warranty, contact Generac first. If the warranty has expired, this DIY fix saves you a trip to the shop and a repair bill.
