Save Money Propagating Comfrey Cuttings
Propagating Comfrey Cuttings Made Easy
Comfrey is a wonder plant! As such, I want it planted all over my property. The best way to plant a lot of comfrey when you’re on a budget is by propagating comfrey cuttings. You can take a small piece of comfrey root, and turn it into hundreds of plants in a few years.
Watch the video below to see how I used a 1/2 gallon pot to grow one comfrey cutting into 1 plant and 7 new cuttings.
How To Plant Comfrey Root Cuttins
These small sections of lateral comfrey roots are usually 2-6 inches long. When planting comfrey cuttings, place the root horizontally in the soil with 1.5″ (heavy clay soils) to 4″ (sandy soil) of soil on top. After planting, apply lots of nitrogen (manure, urine, etc.). The root cuttings should develop buds within 20 to 40 days.
Although you can plant cuttings directly into the ground, you will have better results starting them in pots or beds for the first year. Once established, you can transplant them to a permanent location and take some new cuttings at that time.
Root cuttings take 1½ to 2 years to grow to the size of a one-year plant. Crown cuttings will make a large one-year plant in 1 to 1½ years. One year plants will reach full maturity in 3- to 4- years.
