Why Blue Sea 5118 Class T 250-Amp Fuse Is on the Homestead
Overcurrent protection is not optional in a high-current solar system. This Blue Sea 5118 Class T 250-amp fuse is the actual fuse that goes inside my Blue Sea 5502 fuse block, protecting the entire system from catastrophic short circuits. With a 20,000 amp interrupt capacity (AIC), it can safely break a massive fault without exploding or welding itself closed.
I installed this fuse between my battery distribution system and my EG4 12000XP inverter. If a dead short occurs in the inverter or the cables feeding it, this fuse blows in milliseconds, preventing fires and equipment destruction. What Is a Class T Fuse?
Class T fuses are a specific type of fast-acting fuse designed for high-current DC applications. They are characterized by extremely fast response to short circuits and very high interrupt capacity. The “T” designation refers to the time-current characteristic, meaning these fuses blow very quickly when faced with a massive overcurrent event.

The 5118 is a 250-amp fuse that fits the Blue Sea 5502 fuse block, which accepts Class T fuses from 225 to 400 amps. This combination provides reliable overcurrent protection for systems up to about 300 amps continuous, with plenty of headroom for surge currents.
How I Use This Fuse on My System
Here is where this fuse fits into my system protection scheme:
- Six EG4 rack-mount LFP batteries connect to a common bus bar
- From the bus bar, power flows through the Victron Lynx M10 distribution system
- A breaker provides initial overcurrent protection
- The Blue Sea 5502 fuse block houses this 5118 250A Class T fuse
- 4/0 AWG cables run from the fuse block to the EG4 12000XP inverter
- If a short occurs at the inverter, this fuse blows before cables overheat or equipment is damaged

Installation Tips

- Torque specs: Blue Sea 5502 fuse block terminals torque to 190 in-lb
- Orientation: Install with proper polarity markings visible
- Accessibility: Mount the fuse block where it can be easily accessed for replacement
- Spare on hand: Keep a spare fuse because you will need it when (not if) you accidentally create a short during system work
- Investigate before replacing: If the fuse blows, find and fix the fault before installing a new fuse
